The concept is deceptively simple. Four distinguished international contemporary artists. Four distinct rooms in which to create an engaging exhibit or installation. The highly anticipated second edition of the project (launched 2017) will open on Thursday 13th June at Copeland Gallery in Peckham.

Celebrating creative difference, Artist Rooms provides each participant an opportunity to innovate and assert their individuality as practitioners. The varied experiential quality of each room echoes the unique approach of each artist. From poetic assemblages of discarded architectural fragments, to multilayered photographic collages and a dynamic group of twenty 4-6ft sculptural ceramic vessels, the multidisciplinary works on display will make for a captivating and layered viewing experience.

The list of exhibitors is impressive. Each artist notably having gained significant critical acclaim early in their careers (see below for details). Following individual appearances at institutional venues worldwide, such as the Saatchi Gallery (UK), Imago Mundi - Luciano Bennetton Collection (Italy), Kunsthal Aarhus (Denmark) and Trafo Kunsthall (Norway) all four artists are now jointly turning their attention to occupying the 5000sqft South London exhibition space.

Artist Rooms will run until 25th June.

Magdalena Wysocka (b. 1987, Poland) and Claudio Pogo (b. 1978, Germany) form a Berlin-based artist duo. With backgrounds in printmaking and photography, their practice spans a range of interconnected mediums, from large-scale printed canvases to meticulously crafted photobooks. Central to their approach is the collection and re-contextualization of found imagery—materials drawn from vintage photographs, books, and archives. These sources are stripped of their original contexts and transformed, creating new visual narratives that challenge the boundaries between past and present. This body of work focuses on the more abstract pieces from the artists' 2024 collection, which draws upon the aesthetic traditions of minimalism and the meditative qualities of repetition. Wysocka and Pogo’s revisitation of themes through Risography reflects a disciplined restraint while celebrating the richness of variation that arises from repeated forms and processes. I often draw on the canvasses between paint applications using pastels, pencils and color pencils to affect the overall image and to shift color values. An electric sander is used to smooth out any build-up of texture and to bring forward colors and patterns obscured in previous layers. Each application of paint is lapped over the side of the canvas leaving a memory map for those who are willing to look around the ragged edges. In this way, I’m emphasizing that the surface is an illusion of nothing more than built up layers of paint.”

H E L L G R E N The work of Fanny Hellgren (b.1992, Gothenburg, Sweden) deals with ideas of time, change, and ephemerality in relation to natural and constructed landscapes. She works in series of abstractions and has over the years oscillated between painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation. Using materials such as sand, stone, water, resin, concrete, pigment, graphite, and paper, the properties and agency of the materials guides her process based practice. In Hellgren’s work, natural science and mysticism merges and reflects on the connection between the micro and the macro, the cycles of nature, and the meaning-seeking nature of humans. Hellgren’s new series of sculptures out of sand, resin, and pigments are islands of desert land - alienated from each other. They reflect on in the human impulse to search for meaning, and how the sensation of purpose is dependent on the feeling of connection to the world around us, other humans, and nature. The sculptures are physical objects in the room but at the same time they appear distant - they act as windows towards space or places beyond the room. People react differently when thinking of the endless universe. Some people feel a comfort and fascination, whereas others think it’s terrifying to reflect on their own smallness. In the same way, these sculptures may appear as desert, cold, and lonely places, or as a calm refuge from which we can get a perspective and distance from a chaotic world. T E A G U E Artworks seen from Teague’s exhibition ‘Line Languages’ in Spring 2022 / We are delighted to unveil a major solo exhibition of Teague’s latest work, opening November 2024. This latest body of work was developed between the rugged landscapes of the Isle of Eigg, Scotland, and a focused residency in Torino, Italy. These pieces explore the tension between chance and control, where spontaneous marks meet the artist’s intentional gestures—a dialogue between the accidental and the deliberate. Featured alongside will be works by emerging artist Fanny Hellgren (b.1992, Gothenburg) who deals with ideas of time, change, and ephemerality in relation to natural and constructed landscapes. K A N E K O Untitled, 2020 Glazed raku ceramic 37 × 30 1/4 × 15 1/2 in 94 × 76.8 × 39.4 cm Jun Kaneko makes glazed ceramics that resemble inflated, three-dimensional canvases. Often as tall as 13 feet, these objects are meant to spark interaction with both their immediate space and their architectural environments. “Whether I’m making a large or small object, in the end I hope it will make sense to have that particular scale and form together and that it will give off enough visual energy to shake the air around it,” he has said.
