Curated exhibition by Richeldis Fine Art LIAIRGE
2023 LONDON
Richeldis Fine Art presents a curated collection of minimalist abstract works from a diverse group of international artists. Featured artists include Nicky Hodge (UK), Carla Cascales Alimbau (Spain), Arjan Janssen (Netherlands), Clementine Stoney Maconachie (Australia), M. Weiss (Germany), and Emma Zhang (China). Each artist brings a distinct perspective to the minimalist movement, offering unique interpretations of form, material, and abstraction.
Emma Zhang, a rising talent from China, exemplifies purist principles in her art. For over six years, she has focused on a singular theme, creating serene compositions marked by an earthy palette of beiges, browns, and soft hues. Using acrylic paint, handmade paper, antique books, and fabrics, Zhang’s minimalist approach results in organic, contemplative works with a quiet yet profound impact.
Nicky Hodge, based in London, explores the balance between instinct and restraint in her black-on-black series. Working across multiple canvases at once, she layers watery acrylics, sometimes stripping them back to reveal raw surfaces. The result is a series of monochromatic works that rely on subtle tonal shifts and gut-level mark-making, each inviting viewers into an emotional, rather than intellectual, dialogue.
Dutch artist Arjan Janssen, known for his philosophical approach to abstraction, creates minimal yet powerful canvases. His vertically oriented works, with reduced elements, are collected by institutions and private collections across Europe. Janssen’s restrained canvases express a quiet intensity and reflect his deep engagement with the relationship between form and thought.
Clementine Maconachie, an emerging sculptor from Australia, works with metal and natural stone to create abstract, organic forms. Her signature totems, composed of irregularly stacked color blocks, embrace the beauty of imperfection. Maconachie’s sculptures juxtapose hard materials with soft, flowing shapes, revealing a delicate balance between strength and vulnerability.
M. Weiss, a Cologne-based painter, explores the boundary between painting and sculpture in his impasto abstract works. His canvases are layered and carved, emphasizing the physical properties of paint. Grounded in natural, earthy tones, Weiss’s minimalist compositions seek harmony between form and color, creating works that are both minimal and richly textured.
Spanish artist Carla Cascales Alimbau transforms organic materials into minimalist sculptures and paintings, inspired by the Japanese practice of kintsugi, where cracks in ceramics are repaired with gold. Her sustainable art practice highlights the beauty in imperfections, capturing fragility and strength through delicate forms and understated elegance.
This exhibition showcases the diversity within contemporary minimalist abstraction, offering viewers a rich exploration of material and form.
