Maggie King's studio at Nettlecombe, Exmoor, is a haven of calm reflection. Her carvings in stone and wood have a stillness and purity that is a valuable antidote to the superficial and often aggressive tendencies in contemporary art today. Interest in Maggie King's work is growing – a stone carving was recently purchased by Robert Hiscox, one of the foremost collectors of contemporary British art of his generation and The Bernard Noble Sculpture Foundation in Italy proposed a commission for an outdoor sculpture. Her recent work, showing more ambition in scale, will enhance an already developing reputation.

Born in Northampton, Maggie King trained at the Sir John Cass School of Art, London, and at West Surrey College of Art and Design. A sculptor, principally in stone and wood, a painter and draughtsman she has exhibited widely in London and the provinces. Shows have included an invited exhibition with Sandra Blow at New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham. Her sculptures are distinguished by fine craftsmanship and an intuitive sense of balance and harmony and are informed by a feeling for the historical traditions of carving. These qualities are echoed in her small scale paintings and drawings that show her fine control of the most brief gestures of line and colour.

Largely unaffected by prevailing trends or fashions, she uses the process of carving for her own cathartic needs and with a natural restraint – her tendency is always towards understatement – she has built a significant body of work that is both personal and quietly individual.

Daniel has exhibited extensively in the UK in private galleries and museums, across Europe and the States.  He has undertaken numerous prestigious commissions for both private and corporate clients including Hermes, Pfizer and Enron.  Daniel trained in engineering and his training as an artist is rooted in architectural design where he worked at Zaha Hadid Architects between 1987 and 1991.

He then went to study at Goldsmith College and graduated in 1989 with classmates including Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and Gavin Turk.  After graduating the circle of artists had key exhibitions at The Saatchi Gallery, London.  It was during this period, now almost 25 years ago they were dubbed the Young British Artists’, or YBA, and established Britart.
Daniel Chadwick is best known for his mechanical evocation of nature.  His mobile sculpture pieces are an art of balance, his principle works are made up of kinetic solar systems that revolve in complicated balance whose orbits glide in communicative accord with themselves.  The large scale mobiles possess a meditative quality and are exquisitely beautiful to watch, bringing to light not only the artist’s creative flair but also his mathematical ingenuity.

Daniel’s ‘White Mobile I’ was recently exhibited along with work from other household names such as Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas and Antony Gormley in the 2010 exhibition The Crucible in Gloucester’s medieval cathedral. The exhibition was soon heralded as one of the largest and most important shows of contemporary sculpture to take place in Britain during the past decade.

‘Marry Me’ and ‘Our Green Valleys’ two of Daniel’s static pieces are as precise and flawless as his other works.  They represent, through computer generation, the topography of the undulating Gloucestershire countryside where he lives and works. They represent a very new and exciting means of representing landscapes through art.

He is son of 20th century sculptor Lynn Chadwick and has exhibited at international galleries including Pangolin, London, Elaine Baker Gallery, Miami, Eli Klein Gallery, New York, Fine Art Society, London, Kinetica Museum, London, JGM Galerie, Paris, Bloomberg Space, London, Science Museum, London.  His work is in private collections all round the world.

Cuillin Bantock, b.1935 is a British Oxford graduate and professor of Zoology, expert in developmental cytogenetics and comes from a family of highly accomplished British composers.
He later became a 60’s graduate of Camberwell College of Art.  He was born in the Midlands and spent his childhood on the wild desolate coastline of Northern Wales.  Returning to full time painting in 1989 Cuillin applies his scientific knowledge to his painting juxtaposed with a natural flair for colour, texture, space and light.  Working with what he calls a ‘catholic’ choice of media; oil, acrylic, watercolour, gouache,conte crayon and lino cuts, Cuillin pieces are figurative and non figurative heavily influenced by his childhood home. Cuillin first exhibited in 1956 with The Royal Society of Painters. 

Since his return to full time painting he has exhibited in solo and mixed shows across the UK, predominantly in London.  He has also exhibited in Canada and the US.  Over the years Bantock’s paintings have become more abstract.

''There is an underlying purity to be found in Tess Williams’ resolutely contemporary conception of new abstraction. Yet, the surfaces of her paintings reveal something more layered: gritty textures, exposed staples, the cutting and reconstructing of canvas and in some works delicate stitching.

Traces of the artist’s mark lie visible on tactile planes in areas of peeling and scraped away pigment, imprinted marks, and calligraphic lines of paint. Pieces of frayed and raw canvas are artfully combined with monochromatic areas of grey and black as well as lighter fleshy tones that refer to the human body.

In each work the artist plays with the sculptural qualities of deconstructed canvas, pushing the medium further by creating a newly topographic surface. Williams notes: “This contrast explores the relationship between the male and female properties of materials, and how when juxtaposed, they can form a dynamic visual language.”

Through a mastery of surface and composition, Williams’ paintings imaginatively balance idioms from mid-century abstraction with contemporary urban references and the mark of the artist in the atelier. This virtuosic use of tone, texture and a sculptural sensibility of canvas, color and form make Williams’ work a significant contribution to twenty-first century artistic reimagining of the tenets of abstraction.''

My paintings evoke the modernist expressive way of handling material, however being a contemporary artist I am reinventing the possibilities of this language. My practice is one of discovering through making setting off with the confidence that an image can be transformed through painting and sculpture to find new images and metaphors. I have an ongoing fascination with the ambiguity of human form, the final works evoke subjects and situations that have continued to fascinate me after seeing films, reading newspapers and observations in daily life. "The most impressive of the painters, however, seemed to me the most conventional in Modernist terms.
